Have you noticed that if you do something monthly, each time less and less time seems to pass between those monthly activities? 🙂

Self-development

I have finally finished the book “Responsibility rebellion” by Kain Ramsay (book review coming soon). My most exciting takeaway were three different concepts – self-esteem, self-worth and self-concept. Indirectly quoting Mr Ramsay: in self-esteem, the estimation is external. Working on self-worth, on the contrary, is working on what your inner worth is, which is much more beneficial. Self-concept comes into play when you know your self-worth and can work on your purpose.

The most expensive modern art

According to Wikipedia, the most expensive modern art painting is a painting of the U.S. flag by the artist and ex-military Jasper Johns, painted 2010. The original selling price was 110 million… no comment 🙂

Canary Islands

Have you been thinking, just like me, that the islands are named after birds? Wrong! The islands’ name came from the Latin term for the island, Insula Canaria, meaning ‘Island of the Dogs’.

2021 C.E.

Do you remember “bc” and “ad” from the history classes? Let me quickly untangle these abbreviations for you: bc means before Christ, and ad means anno domini, i.e. in the year of the Lord.

At some point internet majority turned to “bce” and “ce” instead. BCE stands for Before Common Era and C.E. – for Common Era. This option is considered less Christian and more inclusive.

Interestingly enough, the counting for both starts with the same event – the birth of Christ. 2021 AD/CE means nothing to those whose religion is not based on the Lord’s birth date. Inclusive, huh?

Names of the Swiss peaks and mountains

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time hiking this and last year, and I have to admit this is one of the most enriching activities I have experienced. Standing on the top of a mountain and looking down at the whole world at your feet is absolute freedom.

While hiking, I could not help but notice the funny names Swiss peaks and mountains (and other places) have. Here is an excellent overview of such pearls as Balmhorn, Egghorn, Gornergrat, Jungfraujoch etc. and where their names come from.

El Salvador

Back to names and religions – El Salvador is named in honour of Jesus Christ (El Salvador being Spanish for The Savior).

Kayfabe

I’ve been watching a video on a youtube channel named Frame Problems. This beautiful word came up about both wrestling and politics.

A kayfabe in professional wrestling portrays staged events within the industry as “real” or “true”, specifically the portrayal of competition, rivalries, and relationships between participants as being genuine and not staged.

Interesting parallels with politics. Looking forward to episode 2.

That’s not fair

I loved this short article by Seth Godin. Indeed, how often do we complain about fairness when the world lines up the way we hoped it would?
